Egger Group opens first wood processing plant in Russia
15/06/2006 - 10:35

On 26 May 2006, the Egger Group opened its first Russian production facility in Shuya. The company has invested 100 million euro in the plant, which is located 330 km north east of Moscow. The 81.5-hectare site will be used to manufacture raw and melamine-faced chipboard. The annual production capacity for raw chipboard is 250,000 m³. One of Egger's aims in investing in Shuya is to satisfy the high levels of demand for high-quality panels from the Russian furniture sector.

Project not without its problems

In his welcoming speech, Michael Egger, CEO of the Egger Group, made no attempt to gloss over the difficulties encountered by the project: "The construction of our factory was marred by delays, caused in part by official approval procedures, partly by the hard Russian winter and language barriers. We've considerably exceeded our original budget for the project. However, the factory is meanwhile on a sound footing and I'm delighted that Egger's fifteenth production facility in Europe is now open for business in Shuya."
The construction of the Egger factory is the largest investment project in the Ivanovo region in recent decades. Egger has created around 300 new jobs, and approximately 1.000 additional jobs are expected to be generated within the region.
